Gaden Shartse Norling School was first established in early 1970s with single purpose to educate those young kids who joined the monastery at that time. From its initial strength of 20 kids now it has grown to a school with population of 650 monk students. The system of education is basically divided into five levels, Preliminary, Elementary, Secondary, Higher Secondary and College level.

1. Preliminary level is the level where infant kids are taught how to read and write etc.

2. Elementary level consists of five classes from First to Fifth.

3. Secondary level consists of five classes from Sixth to Tenth.

4. Higher Secondary level consists of six classes from Eleventh to Sixteenth.

5.College level consists of six classes from Seventeenth to Twenty second.

(A)  In later part of elementary level monks start learning various subjects like history, grammar, poetry etc.

(B)  In the secondary level besides other subject monks start learning skills of practical dialectics and Buddhist
Philosophy.

(C) In higher secondary level monks spend more time at debate courtyard and home study then attending classes in the school.

(D) In college level besides taking daily private lectures and attending debate sessions, monks does lots of home study.

Regular education covers:  Tibetan History, Literature, Poetry, Grammar, English and Basic Mathematics.

Education of Buddhist philosophy covers:  Elementary Dialectics, Buddhist Logic, Perfection of wisdom (the Prajnaparamita), Central Philosophy (Madhyamika),
Abidharma (Epistomology & metaphysics), Vinaya (Buddhist Ethics) and Tantra.

Extra-curricular activities include: Chanting, Music, Painting, Calligraphy, Tailoring, Craft of Butter Sculpture, and Sand mandala.

We encourage monk students to independently pursue and practice profound Buddhist rituals and do extensive solitary retreats.

Shartse Norling School is headed by Geshe  Jangchup Kunga. While Geshe Thupten Dhondup, Geshe Lobsang Tsewang, Geshe Jampa Palden, Ven. Ngawang Dragpa, Ven. Lobsang Tsondue, Ven. Konchog Tenzin, Ven. Lungrik Gyatso, Ven. Karma Tseten and Ven. Konchok Yarphel are members of teaching faculty.

For the improvement of Gaden Shartse Norling School we need to:

  1. Increase the number of teachers.
  2. Print more text books and special exercise note books.
  3. Acquire electricity backup system for the computer lab.
  4. Educational materials.
